Part 1 of 2: A Statement of Faith
Peter’s story in Luke 5 where the all night long work of Peter and his colleagues ended with nothing is very instructive in many respects. It teaches us how Jesus’ intervention in our affairs makes all the difference between absolute success and abject failure.
Jesus asked Peter and his friends to “launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch. But Simon answered and said to Him, Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless, at Your word I will let down the net.” (Lk 5:4-5)
Did you notice that Peter addressed Jesus as “Master?” The ancient Greek word Luke used for Master (epistata) means “commander,” “leader,” or “boss.” Peter’s decision to address Jesus as the master meant that he was willing to take orders from Jesus. Are you tired of leaning on your own understanding and you are the point when you are now willing to do things Jesus’ way?
Peter’s frustration was very clear: Master, we’ve toiled all night and caught nothing; but because I see you as the boss, we will have another go at catching fish. Peter could have given some excuses, he could have said: I worked all night and I’m tired. I know a lot more about fishing than a carpenter does. Fishing is better undertaken at night, not in the daytime. All these crowds and loud teaching have scared the fish away. We already washed our nets, we’re done for the day, tomorrow is another day, we’ve given up. You may know stuff about religion, but we are the pros.
Peter didn’t give any excuse, he just said: At Your word Lord, I will let down the net. This was a great statement of faith, and trust in Jesus’ word. There is something about the word of God.
At His word, there was light. At His word the sun, moon and stars, were created. At His word life came to earth. At His word creation is held together and sustained. At His word empires rise and fall. At His word history unfolds God’s plans. At His word the woman with the sprit of infirmity was healed. At His word Jairus’ daughter was raised from the dead.
At His word Lazarus came back to life. At His word the woman with the issue of blood was healed. At His word the man lying by the pool of Bethsaida for several decades was healed. At His word the legs of the lame man by the gate called beautiful received strength. Peter obeyed his word and see how he was richly rewarded.
Will you declare this week: as I believe, obey and confess the Word of God, my faith as a believer with get to a higher level. With a higher faith shall come a greater shower of favor upon me, my family, my church, my ministry, and my gifts. At His word, I will receive my breakthrough.
