Title: Now that the US Elections is Over
On Saturday November 7, 2020, former Vice President Joe Biden was projected to be the winner of the November 3 US election, meaning he would become the 46th US president and would be sworn in on January 20, 2021. This came after an extremely contentious campaign, with emotions running high on both sides of the political divide.
We thank God that the elections were conducted largely in a peaceful atmosphere, and that Biden’s projection did not lead to violence. Many ‘prophets’ have prophesied mayhem, doom and gloom; many political pundits were convinced that there would be nothing but chaos and pandemonium in the aftermath of the election.
As believers, our point of reference always should be the Bible, like this powerful verse in 1 Tim 2:1-2: ‘First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.’
So, whether you supported or voted for Democrats or Republicans, we should follow the Bible’s admonition about being subject to the governing authorities. ‘For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore, whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment.’ (Rom 13:1-2). The Bible makes it clear that ‘it is God who changes times and seasons; he removes kings and sets up kings; he gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding.’ (Dan 2:21). Whether your candidate of choice won or lost the elections, all you need to do is pray ‘for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions.’ (1 Tim 2:1-2).
In the grand scheme of things, come to think of it, human governments cannot fully or permanently redress wrong; it cannot uproot sin from the human heart. This can be done only by the saving grace of God through Jesus Christ. A Republican or a Democratic president is not equipped solved all our problems, as believers the one we should totally depend on is God.
Maybe you haven’t noticed, politicians are also human beings, like the rest of us, that’s why the Bible points out that ‘The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it? (Jer 17:9). Another instructive verse in the Bible is Isa 64:6: ‘We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment. We all fade like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.’ One regime will fade, another will appear.
And Rom 3:22–25 declares: ‘The righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith.’
Here is our joy: the one and only true God, the one whose throne is in heaven and earth is his footstool (Isa 66:1), the one who is neither elected or selected, the one who doesn’t need votes to be God, remains on the throne. Focus on him, and on nothing else.
Have a great week.
