25 May Thriving During COVID-19 – Adversity Reveals, God Changes
“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” – James 1:2-4
Most likely, you have heard of a statement that implies that adversity changes us. This statement is not entirely true; adversity does not change us; adversity only reveals us. God is the one that changes us. What we become is first a result of our ability to accept what adversity reveals and second our ability to surrender to God’s transforming power.
In Romans 12:3, Apostle Paul tells us “For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.”. Unfortunately, most of us regard ourselves more highly than we are, and this is a significant hindrance to the work of God in our lives. That is why it usually takes adversity to be confronted with our weakness and develop a heart of humility to submit to God’s transforming power. Hence one of the blessings of adversity to get us to admit our weakness and submit to God’s
No doubt, the current adversity brought by the coronavirus pandemic has revealed so many things about you, whether it is about the condition of your marriage, your money or business management skill, your character, your personality, or your heart. No matter what is revealed, this is not the time to be defensive, but to accept it is part of the process. Many people lose the blessing of adversity because they become defensive and find someone to blame. David said, “Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. 24 See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting” (Psalm 139:23-24)
God often uses adversity to reveal our heart so we can allow Him to lead us. The secret of thriving is to accept what adversity reveals humbly and so that God can correct or strengthen it. I pray that God will give you the wisdom to do this in Jesus’ name.
Let us defeat COVID-19 by staying CALM, SAFE, CLEAN, and SANCTIFIED!
